Monument to the Battle of the Nations
Monument RoadOn the initiative of the Museum of City History, Leipzig, representatives of German monuments/memorials and places of commemoration established the network "Monument Road" in April 2008. The following monuments are represented in the network: The Hermann Monument (Detmold), the Monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I (Porta Westfalica), the Kyffhaeuser Monument (near Bad Frankenhausen), the Naval Monument, Laboe (near Kiel), the Victory Column (Berlin), the Monument to the Battle of Nations (Leipzig) and the Wartburg (near Eisenach). |

Together, they receive two and a half million visitors per year and, hence, command a dominant position in the German cultural landscape.
The initiative aims at establishing a closer network, comprising these places of commemoration (as focal points of historical experience), and creating an enhanced visitor experience for these memorials through joint marketing activity.
The network’s vision is to initiate a European Monument Road, overcoming the close confines of national historical interpretations and to help create a broad awareness of the common European history.
